Improving Education: Time changes needed
Mar 18th, 2010 | By admin | Category: Opinion & CommentaryAt almost all EVSC schools, it’s the same routine everyday; school starts at 7:40 and releases at 2:50. It’s a long seven hour school day Monday through Friday. And by the end of the weekend the only thing that runs through your mind is the thought of the next five school days dragging along until the next weekend. Some countries even go to school all year long. Luckily, we get summer break to relax and prepare ourselves for another long school year starting up in August. Although we’re so used to this, some people would even consider making some changes to our school routine.
7:40 seems early to be starting school, and by 2:50 it feels like the whole day has been wasted sitting in a classroom. Some students would agree with starting school even just a little bit later which would result in getting released later too.
“Even just getting an extra fifteen minutes to sleep in the morning would make a big difference for me. I wouldn’t feel like taking a nap in class everyday,” said junior Kara Sims. It would also be an advantage for students with after school jobs. “By the time I get off work it’s about 9:30 and I still have to go home and shower, eat dinner, and get my homework done,” said Sims.
Getting up later wouldn’t seem like such a big deal trying to stay up later to finish homework. On the other hand, starting school earlier would mean having more time after school to do stuff because we would be getting out earlier, which would be a great advantage on a Friday night. But would it really be worth it? Students would be more tired at school then they are now. It’s very possible that grades would drop dramatically from lack of sleep.
By the time May rolls around, it’s finally warm out and time for summer break. For several schools in Texas, they have to go to school all year. Think about if our school was like that. That would mean we would have a very short summer break, but on the other hand we would have more breaks throughout the year. Over the span of the summer, we tend to forget a lot that we learned during school so that would make it easier for when we went back, but it’s always nice knowing you have a good two months off. For students that want summer jobs, it would be virtually impossible since summer break would be cut so much shorter. There might be less ‘me’ time, but it would help because a lot of today’s youth is on the television or computer It would be good to just have a constant education than a two month break.
We spend almost 35 hours a week at school. Wouldn’t it be so much nicer if that was cut shorter? If we had school on a Saturday or Sunday that would make the other school days shorter, but cut our weekend to one day. uneasy to get out of school.
There are many factors to consider when reconstructing the school day. In some ways there could be some major improvements but it could also tear everything apart since we are so used to things the way they are.
