Sibling divers push each other

Every team has a family-like atmosphere. The swim team actually has a brother and sister pushing each other to excel at what they do best. Haley Offutt and Tyler Offutt are rated in the top ten divers in the state, and they credited each other for their success.

On the swim team, these two divers must work as a team by helping each other to achieve their goals.

“Teamwork for the swim team is important because you need the support from the other swimmers and divers,” Tyler, a junior, said.

Tyler Offutt flips through the air on the descent to the pool.

“Teamwork pretty much makes up swim team. We have to call each other out and we have to help each other,” said Haley, a sophomore.

The dive practices are grueling and the best motivation is to work off of each other.

“As divers, the goal is to do our eleven dives during one practice which lasts about two hours, and to perfect our entrance because you don’t want to make a big splash for your dive,” Haley said.

The two travel to Jasper for intense practices.

“We have a volunteer coach, that helps us, but for the most part we are on our own. We also have a camera set up so we can help each other out and see for ourselves if we can perfect our dives as much as we can,” Haley said.

These two divers put so much time into perfecting their dives, by trying to perfect their dives as much as they can. If they work hard, their dives show it.

“We have to do our approaches before we go to the board, and we have to put the camera in slow motion to see what we can improve on,” Haley said.

This hard work has helped them identify what needs to be worked on.

“For the most part, I need to improve on getting my arms together when I make my entrance in the water, and I need to work on fixing my approach. I have a lot to improve. I just need to become more consistent with my dives, which are more fun than anything, and to get higher score,” said Haley.

The dive and swim team works as a team and perfects their flaws to achieve greatness.

“I have gotten second at almost every meet, and I got second at city, state, and sectionals,” said Haley.

“Every year I set goals to meet at state, and I want to dive to receive a scholarship and to continue to dive for college,” said Tyler.

Sometimes when two siblings compete for one sport they can have a sibling rivalry. It can come out for the better, and they could help each other out by perfecting each others’ faults or it could end out in a real rivalry where they are so competitive.

“My brother, Tyler, helps me more than any of the other divers. He is always asking me if I need help. I do not think we have a sibling rivalry, but we are competitive to a point which makes me want to perfect my dives just to become better,” said Haley

“My sister and I are competitive in everything we do, although, most of it is just to be funny. I help her out by giving her tips and helping her out since I have more experience with diving.”

These two divers are both competitive at everything they do, but they are always there for each other. By perfecting each others dives to helping out with the pressure of diving, they “help each other all the way,” said Haley.
