Local election counts
This year, the 2008 Congressional elections will coincide with the U. S. presidential election. Held on November 4th, the election will determine who will represent the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives.
Indiana holds nine seats in the House of Representatives. The people appointed to the House, hold the position for two years. The House of Representatives is just one of two chambers in the United States Congress.
The two southern most House districts are the 8th and the 9th districts,
The 8th district is located in southwestern Indiana,
The three candidates for the 8th district Congressional race are current representative Brad Ellsworth, Gregory Goode, and Paul Abramson.
The current 8th district representative is Brad Ellsworth. He assumed the office January 4th, 2007. Ellsworth is a conservative Democrat. He was previously the Vanderburgh County sheriff. Ellsworth has already raised $761,533 during his campaign. Ellsworth opposes abortion and gun control, and was one of the 16 Democrats to vote against stem cell research.
Greg Goode has raised $79, 229 during his campaign. Goode was the executive assistant to the president for external affairs at Indiana State University, and the former director of constituent services in the office of Congressman Kerns. Goode has raised the second highest amount in the race.
Paul Abramson is the founder and editor of Creationism.org. Paul Abramson is extremely religious and tends to express his strong but contradicting beliefs.
The 9th district is located in southeastern Indiana.
The two candidates for the 9th district Congressional race are current representative Baron Hill and Michael Sodrel.
The current 9th district representative is Democrat Baron Hill. Hill was appointed the representative from January of 1999 to January of 2005 and then reappointed in January of 2007. Hill voted for the “No Child Left Behind” and was named the co-chairman of the Blue Dog Coalition.
Michael Sodrel is a former House representative. Michael Sodrel assumed the position in January of 2005. Sodrel is a member of the Republican Party. He is currently campaigning on creating and protecting jobs, and lowering taxes and values. His party is pro-life and against gun control.

Current Governor, Mitch Daniels will run against the winner of the democratic primary on November 4th.
Mitch Daniels will be the only Republican to run this election. Daniels was appointed as Indiana’s 49th Governor in January of 2005. Daniels announced he was running to be re-elected in June of 2007.
The two Democratic parties running for Indiana’s Governor are Jill Long Thompson and Jim Schellinger.
Schellinger is an architect from Indianapolis. Schellinger was appointed to serve on the Capital Improvement Board by Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson.
Long Thompson has served four years on the Fourth District House of Representatives. She also spent over five years as U.S. Under Secretary of Agriculture. Long Thompson is currently a politician and educator. If elected she will be the first female Governor of Indiana.
The general election will be held on November fourth between Governor Mitch Daniels and the winner of the May 6th Democratic primary winner.
