Winter Wardrobe

At some point in our lives we dream of a life where cold winter weather is not an issue. Unfortunately for most, that may not happen until retirement. Instead of long walks on sun-soaked beaches, or Tuesday summer night parties, we look forward to waking up at five in the morning trying to find some sort of warmth to wear along with respectable clothes for those below-freezing days.

Figuring out what to wear, can give you a headache in the morning. Will you wear a jacket to keep you warm or is a toasty cashmere sweater in order? Or are there any respectable looking scarves out there? To avoid the stress-filled 6 o’clock wardrobe worries, you can put together an ensemble that is cute and can be done in a few minutes.

Luckily, dressing for the weather does not have to be as complicated as you think. It can be a quick and easy task to accomplish by having the key pieces to your winter wardrobe ready to go. By relying on warm weather accessories and laying multiple lightweight pieces, keeping warm can be easy and you won’t have to be stuck wearing a ski suit in the process. Your rug knit scarf will keep you warm and still be fashionable enough to wear with anything.

Having a long sleeve shirt, with an outer shorter sleeve shirt over can keep you warm. Use multiple simple colors, but avoid wearing several different patterns at once. This keeps you looking slim and cozy.

You can build a wardrobe around three or four key pieces, for example having a stretch tee under a basic sleeve tee. You can then throw off the look of layers by also adding a jersey knit camisole while still keeping the rule of simple, multiple layers.

Getting something that is functional and good quality can make you feel good and you can also look great in it.

Those that are worried about not being able to express themselves with winter clothes don’t have to worry. Outerwear like a great coat, or a hat is also another form of expression. You can never go wrong with an over-sized crotched hat that can be easily thrown on while you’re on your way out the door.

Many stores specialize in winter ensembles, but you can do just as well picking your own favorites from the different stores you frequent. For example, that really cute asymmetrical striped sweater under shirt from Wet Seal would be perfect with an Argyle V Neck Tee from American Eagle; also you can add some warmth to your outfit with that crotched beanie scarf from Forever 21 for a quick cute look for the morning.

But you don’t have to spend a lot to get a lot. Many of the same looks can be found at Kohl’s, sometimes on the sale racks. And some of the basics, like the solid-colored tees can be just a few bucks at discount giants like Target, saving you valuable money for more accessories.

But there are times you just can’t avoid a coat. When the temps go down, layers just will not do the job. A coat is in order, but fashion still rules. Having an over-stuffed jacket that should be worn only in an avalanche may look good on little kids, but on you it does not necessarily translate to fashion or beauty.

Relying on one coat all season is not the best choice. You should rather invest in more then one jacket for different types of weather. For colder days, try having a jacket with fur in the inside or a heathered 3/4 sleeves knit jacket. It insolates and keeps you warm for those breezy days. For those days when the sun shines bright but the wind blows, try a herringbone utility jacket that is snug. And to look flirt, go with a short sleeve pea coat or a wool lady’s jacket. They flatter by hugging your torso and then flaring out at the hips to give you a curvy figure.

Scarves and hats are an excellent way to express your style; these simple accessories are the most important part of your outfit. Just throwing a scarf around can add a lot to a look, so can having mixed bead necklaces or metallic headband. A faux leather sash that lies over your shirt helps jazz up your wardrobe.

One of the hardest things to do during the winter is to stay comfortable in different environments. The best combination to use during wintertime is a shirt, light sweater, and a heavy coat. This outfit can deal with any situation, but still be fashionable. So if the weather warms up you can gradually remove layers so you’re never too hot or never too cold. Just because winter is upon us doesn’t mean it time to hibernate; get out there, mix up those winter clothes, and get creative.
